OUR TREASURE TROVE
Silver was one of the seven metals of antiquity that were known to prehistoric humans and whose discovery is thus lost to history. Since silver is more reactive than gold, supplies of native silver were much more limited than those of gold. For example, silver was more expensive than gold in Egypt until around the fifteenth century BC. The earliest silver extraction center’s in Europe was in Sardinia. The origins of silver production in India, China and Japan were almost certainly equally ancient, but are not well-documented due to their great age.
Gold, which can be found for free or as “native,” appears to be the oldest metal used by mankind. In Spanish caverns used in the late Paleolithic era, around 40,000 BC, small amounts of natural gold have been discovered.
Among all the metals, gold is the most malleable. It may be formed into a single-atom wide wire and then stretched to great lengths before snapping. Around 22% of the gold now accounted for comes from South Africa, which has been the source of a sizable share of the world’s gold supply since the 1880s.
In India, where considerable alluvial deposits of the stone could be found many centuries ago along the rivers Penner, Krishna, and Godavari, it is believed that diamonds were originally discovered and mined. India has known about diamonds for at least 3,000 years, and maybe 6,000. Diamonds are extremely rare, with source rock concentrations of no more than one part per billion. The majority of diamonds were discovered in alluvial deposits before the 20th century.
